My name is Gleann Marie F. Alulod a Filipina student. Indonesian people calls me "Marie", I am 21 years old and I am currently a 4th year student at Capiz State University Tapaz Satellite College taking up Bachelor of Elementary Education. I do love singing, dancing, reading and adventuring. Universitas Muhammadiyah Kotabumi is my receiving school and they assigned me at SMA Negeri 3 Kotabumi a High School for Senior students.

SMA Negeri 3 Kotabumi- Senior High School

A. HISTORY/BACKGROUND

SMAN 3 Kotabumi Established in 1990, under the name SMAN 2 Kotabumi, in 1995 it changed to SMAN 3 Kotabumi. SMAN 3 Kotabumi has achieved many achievements, including being declared a Superior SMAN in North Lampung Regency in 2000, becoming a National Standard School in 2006, and becoming an Independent Category School in 2007. For the future, SMAN 3 Kotabumi is directed to become an SNBI (School National Level International). This has been initiated by holding computer training for all school members, be it teachers, staff, and other school members. for the upcoming academic year there will be English Day, which is a day when all school members are required to speak English. Until now SMAN 3 Kotabumi remains a favorite school for SMAN 3 Kotabumi residents. Many alumni of SMAN 3 Kotabumi have succeeded in their fields.

1.2 Academic Support System

The school has implemented a small learning communities, one of it is known as English Club Community. This extra-curricular activity provided to the students, will help them to enhance their understanding and communicating skills in English. This activity is held after school's class hours, the adviser of this community is tasked to mentor the students of some basics terms and on how to communicate well using English Language. This activity is a big stepping stone for the school where it provides the students motivation, personal-individual attention where it will increase their academic skills.

1.3 Teaching System

SMAN Negeri 3 Kotabumi has 3 levels of education in Senior High School from Grades 10-12, The learning process of the school starts at 8 am until 2 pm from Monday to Saturday.

Teachers have to teach for an hour every section, they can use books, Power point presentations in delivering their lesson. In learning process, teachers are using Bahasa Indonesia as the mode of instruction and a little English language in teaching English subject.

1.4 Materials and Other Learning Sources

SMA Negeri 3 Kotabumi- Senior High School usually used the materials and other learning resources in line with the Kurikulum SMA 2013 IPS and MIPA. Subject matters and instructional materials of the teachers can be based online and printed sources.

1.5 Measurement and Evaluation System

Teachers give an evaluation every day after the teacher taught the lesson of the subject to know the students learning and understanding. They have also a quarterly examination to measure the learnings and progress of the students. At the end of the school year, SMAN 3 Kotabumi will hold a recognition program to appreciate the excellent students in every class.

Pedagogical Contents

1.1 Teaching Methods

Based on my observation, the teaching method that the teachers of SMAN 3 Kotabumi- Senior High School using student-centered learning. The method that the teacher will use will depends on him/her to the subject he/she will going to teach and the topic of the lesson he/she will be tackled. The methods that the teacher may use will bring encouragement with content and will develop their knowledge and skills.

1.2 Learning Materials and Innovation

Based on the observation I did to my teacher, the learning materials that she used are books as reference, power point presentation and projector in delivering lesson, and worksheets in group and individual activities. She used the white board as well to widen the idea and knowledge of the learners. Furthermore,the teacher delivered her lesson in a communicative and beautiful presentations that can make the students more interested to listen and learn.

1.3 Sources of Learning and Technology

Based on the observation, the teacher used book based on the 2013 Kurikulum as a source of leaning while the technolgies that they're using are projector, laptop, music, videos and many more.

1.4 Authentic Assessment

The teacher evaluates the students by giving them quizzes and tests at the end of the lesson, the teacher also prepared an examination quarterly to measure the students knowledge and learning in the whole quarter.

1.1 Curriculum

The 2013 Curriculum is the National Curriculum Since 2013/2014. The 2013 curriculum is a National curriculum that has been developed for many years and has fulfilled two dimensions of the curriculum, namely plans and arrangements regarding objectives, content, and learning materials as well as ways used for learning activities.

D. Teaching Practice

1.1 Procedures of Teaching

Preparatory Activities

  1. Teacher will greet the students.
  2. Teacher will picked a student to lead the prayer.
  3. Teacher will check the attendance and do an energizer.
  4. Teacher asks the past lesson through a game and give motivation about the new lesson.

Core Activities

  • Students should listen attentively to the teacher's discussion about the topic.
  • Students are given an opportunity to interact with the teacher.
  • Students are asked by teacher to answer some questions.
  • The teacher divides the class into 4 groups with 5-6 members.
  • Students will answer the worksheets given by the teacher and will report it in front afterwards.
  • The group who'll get a higher score will get a reward.

Closing Activities

  • Teacher ask students about the tackled topic.
  • Teacher will gave short quiz about the lesson.
  • Teacher will give an assignment.
  • Students will pray and say farewell to their teacher.

1.3 Classroom Management

Before I start my class, I do always ask of how they are, if they are feeling good and well and if they are now ready to learn new lesson. Do ask one student to lead the prayer before anything else and checked the classroom environment if it is clean and organize. I do check their attendance too if they are present to my class and make them pass their assignments about the past lesson. I do put interactive activities on my lesson which will bring them enjoyment and excitement. Group activities are also included to my lesson which will improve their social skills in cooperation and helping one another. I always do divide then into 4 groups and let them report their work afterwards. While discussing, I make sure that my students are listening attentively that's why I never forget to make jokes to make them happy and laugh, aside from that, I walked around the class and gave an assistance if they needed some help. I do pick someone as well on my class to read the lesson on the presentation and even on answering some of my questions. To make them active and participative, after they answer the question, I gave them rewards and praises like "Very good", "Excellent" but all the time we sang it happily. I did it to boost their confidence and for them not to be frightened in giving answers, ideas and opinions.

1.4 Problem Solving

The hardest and big problem that I faced in my class is that, not all of the students can speak and understand the English language. They are shy, not brave enough and not confident yet to express their ideas. So, as I teach their class I do put Indonesian translation under the English sentence so that the would understand what I want them to do. I supported and gave them motivation to deliver their ideas and opinion freely. It is my duty to understand and teach them not to judge them.

E. Summary and Suggestions

1.1 Purposes of Practicum

The purpose of the practicum is to develop our teaching skills and pedagogy. to enhance our English skills in communicating, to expose us not only inside the classroom also to their culture, tradition, beautiful spots and all about their country. It lead the way to us on going out on our comfort zone where we did accomplish multiple tasks that we didn't do before.

1.2 Procedures of Practicum

I did the observation first to the one of my cooperating teachers, Mr. Munardi, to know how the teacher delivers the lesson, know how about the class condition, how to handle the class in order or me to prepare my lesson well, if it is my turn to teach. Before I practice teach in class, I did make lesson plan and have my mentor/ cooperating teacher checked it. During my teaching practice mentor/cooperating teacher helped me to choose the best activities that is suitable for my students to enjoy the class. I prepared also my teaching materials before conducting the class, I used Power point presentation, worksheets and videoclips to present my lesson.

1.3 Outcomes of Practicuum

I did enjoy my teaching experience in SMA Negeri 3 Kotabumi. After several of teaching demonstrations that I've done, I do make a lesson plan, put some interactive activities, mastering the lesson in teaching the class and preparing all of the instructional materials that would be needed in teaching. Perhaps, I met new friends, teachers and other respected higher positioned people there. Mostly of them are nice, friendly, kind and treating us extra special that's why I will never forget them.

This program opened a door for me in where I developed my skills in communicating English language, I even did surpass my stage fear, I'd given a chance also to show my talents and be a guest speaker for the very first time. even tough, I always doubt myself about the things that I thought I couldn't finish, yet I did it. That's why, as long as you are dedicated in achieving what you're aiming for, nothing can stop you in achieving it. Do your best and you will be reaping the fruit of your labor.

1.4 The Challenges of Practicum

The most challenging part in this practicum is having a language barrier since mostly of them cannot speak and understand the English language, however I overcome it by learning and searching on internet about the meaning of some words. In teaching, I used google translation in translating English into Indonesian language and do put it on my presentation materials, with that I was able to communicate with my students, teachers and even to the people who I interact with.

1.5 Overall Impression

To have an experience to teach abroad at a very young is never I really imagine to happen but it happened, and I am beyond blessed for it. During my stay there, I really learned a lot, regardless of performing or teaching a class, make a lesson plan, prepared materials and be ready to deliver it well. I was able to explore what they have in Indonesia, I've met new kind and good peoples, exposed to their culture and values, tasting the foods and went to some of the beautiful scenic tourist spots there.

I am very thankful that I'd given an opportunity to be the one of the participants who participated in this program. It is a mixed emotion as I ended my practicum because they are so accommodating and treating me well. I met so many people and make more friends who are very kind, sweet and friendly, every time they see me, they are always saying that I do look like them, specifically like a Javanese. Indeed, we have the same appearance because we are Asian people and even though we have cultural and identity differences it is not a hindrance for us to be good and do good.

1.6 Suggestions for Future Improvement

For the next student teacher, first of all you have to be mentally ready because going somewhere far from your loved ones is not easy, even if you will be separated for a very short of time, we cannot deny the fact that you'll be feeling alone, stress, and sad. Secondly, you have to learn some basic language of the country where you will be deployed, from greetings, gratitude's, praises and other basic terms because not all of the people in Indonesia can understand and speak English. Thirdly, you must be kind, friendly, and be appreciative in every good thing they will do to you. In additional you must know the culture, tradition and practices of your assigned country for you to be aware of good to do and not good to do. Lastly, you must be ready in sharing your culture, values, traditions, customs, educational system and many more. And the very important thing is that, have a strong faith and believe in yourself.
